What Comes to Mind Feels Important: The Availability Heuristic

The Science

The human mind does not weigh events by how often they actually happen — it weighs them by how easily they come to mind. When Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman published "Availability: A Heuristic for Judging Frequency and Probability" in Cognitive Psychology in 1973, they showed across nine experiments that when instances are easy to retrieve, people systematically inflate their frequency and importance. In their canonical letter task, subjects judged that the letter K appears more often as the first letter of words than as the third — when in fact K appears roughly twice as often in the third position — purely because words starting with K are easier to summon. Ease of recall manufactures perceived weight.

The effect scales far beyond word games. Lichtenstein, Slovic, Fischhoff, Layman, and Combs (1978, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory), across five experiments with 660 subjects, demonstrated that dramatic, heavily discussed, media-salient causes of death are wildly overestimated relative to mundane ones — tornadoes judged deadlier than asthma, though asthma kills roughly 20 times more people. The mechanism they isolated — disproportionate exposure, memorability, and imaginability — is precisely the property that makes a moon landing or a national tragedy feel "monument-worthy." Layer in Brown and Kulik (1977, Cognition), the founding flashbulb-memory study: 90% of participants retained vivid, durable memories of exactly these kinds of consequential public events, the JFK assassination chief among them. Flashbulb memories are the rare class of recollections the brain biologically refuses to forget.

The bridge from cognitive accessibility to market behavior is attention, and the attention research is unusually concrete. Kapoor et al.'s TweetBoost study (2022, Companion Proceedings of the Web Conference) linked 245,159 tweets across 17,155 users to 62,997 OpenSea assets and found a Spearman correlation of 0.85 (p < 0.001) between an NFT's Twitter visibility and its OpenSea price, with social-media features alone improving price-tier classification by 6% over platform-only baselines. In the broader literature, Da, Engelberg, and Gao's Google Search Volume framework (2011, Journal of Finance) established that abnormal attention measurably precedes changes in returns, volatility, and trading volume — with at least partial permanence rather than full reversion. A 2025 fan-economy study of 150 NFT projects (Frontiers in Blockchain) found follower counts on Twitter and Discord exert a statistically significant, time-lagged positive effect on price. What comes to mind most easily, the data consistently show, is what markets attend to.

Availability also feeds on itself. Kuran and Sunstein (1999, Stanford Law Review) named the dynamic an availability cascade: a self-reinforcing loop in which an expressed perception gains plausibility precisely because it is rising in public discourse, propelled by both informational motives (people update on what others discuss) and reputational ones (people gain standing by discussing it). And the familiarity dividend compounds quietly underneath: Bornstein's (1989, Psychological Bulletin) meta-analysis of 208 mere-exposure experiments established a robust r = 0.26 effect — repeated exposure reliably increases liking — meaning heavily rehearsed events are not just more retrievable but better liked.

The historical record offers three clean illustrations. CryptoPunks were minted in June 2017, given away essentially free, and languished in obscurity for years; the inflection came not from new art but from a classic availability cascade — celebrity adoption (Jay-Z, Mark Cuban, Steve Aoki) and media saturation drove a rise in public discourse that made the collection impossible not to think of. The Pet Rock of 1975 is the cautionary mirror image: a literal rock that grossed roughly $4 million in six months on the strength of a Time cover and a Johnny Carson appearance — pure availability with nothing beneath it, which decayed the moment the conversation died. And vintage trading cards such as the 1975 Topps set became durable collectibles because the figures they depicted (Brett, Yount, Carter) were maximally available in cultural memory — salience, memorability, and imaginability, exactly the Lichtenstein drivers. The contrast is the lesson: availability anchored to nothing evaporates; availability anchored to memories the brain refuses to forget persists.

  • Availability cascades are self-reinforcing (Kuran & Sunstein, 1999, Stanford Law Review). Perceptions gain plausibility simply by rising in public discourse, propelled by informational and reputational motives alike.
  • Familiarity compounds beneath it all (Bornstein, 1989). A robust r = 0.26 mere-exposure effect means heavily rehearsed events are better liked as well as better recalled.

Why This Matters for Meme-orial

Meme-orial's catalog is, in effect, curated along the availability gradient. Its 104 events were not chosen at random; they were chosen because they are maximally retrievable across an entire civilization — a literal index of humanity's flashbulb memories, the class of recollections Brown and Kulik showed the brain keeps for life. One token per event, and a fixed set of 104, means the collection's boundary is a curatorial claim about which moments actually dominate collective recall. Where other collections must build mental accessibility from zero, this one is organized around content whose accessibility was established by history itself.

The violet/pink meta-layer gives that idea a visible form: it encodes the collective conversation around each event — the ongoing public discourse that Kuran and Sunstein identified as the fuel of availability cascades — as an ownable element of the artwork. The retelling of an event, not just the event, becomes part of what the token depicts. And the decade, country, and topic traits mirror how memory actually clusters, letting collectors navigate the set the way recall itself works: by era, by place, by theme. The design does not fight the mind's habit of equating retrievability with importance. It documents it — and the Pet Rock contrast explains why the anchoring matters: conversation fades, but flashbulb memories, like the ledger they are written to, do not.
